The United States book launch is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, Virginia.

2012 is the year in which the world celebrates the 60 years Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne of Great Britain. The affection and friendship which Her Majesty has for the United States is evinced by her many trips over the years “across the pond” whether on affairs of state, or on those occasions when she sought to gain insights related to horse racing, her favorite personal passion.

Americans enthusiastically return this admiration, demonstrated by the parades and throngs of well-wishers that greet her, by the high degree of respect given her as Queen, and by the sense of appreciation for her celebration of the shared values- democracy, rule of law, free enterprise, diversity, language and culture- that the two countries hold dear.

Looking to the future, Her Majesty no doubt takes great pleasure in knowing that the ‘special relationship’ she has so carefully stewarded is founded on important values that continue to spread across the globe. During 1976, on  her visit to the U.S. to celebrate the bicentennial of American Independence, there were only 45 democracies on earth. In 2012, there are over 120- and more people live in freedom than ever before.

One day her responsibilities will be entrusted to a younger generation, yet she can rest assured that she has strengthened the unique heritage that forever link Great Britain and the United States of America.

The Diamond Jubilee celebration will revolve around a special four-day weekend beginning June 2 with the Epsom Derby and ending June 5 with a “Service of Thanksgiving” at St. Paul’s Cathedral and a formal carriage procession by the queen.

But to mark the beginning of the celebration, the queen will host the Diamond Jubilee Pageant at Windsor Castle May 10-13.

The three-day event will showcase horses and cultures from across the globe to honor the queen’s passion for horses. More than 500 horses and 800 performers from 17 countries are expected to attend. The queen will attend Sunday’s show, according to a statement from the queen’s office.

Brandi Phillips, a trick roper and rider with Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls, says it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to portray real American cowboys.

“The history of the American cowboy is so unique,” said Phillips. “We get to represent America and show the grass roots of what we know as the cowboy. It’s an honor.”

Other performances include the Royal Mounted Police from Canada, Kremlin Mounted Cossacks from Great Britain, New South Wales Mounted Police, aborigines from Australia, Marwari horses from India, Bedouin on Grey Arab from the Middle East and Zulu warriors from South Africa, just to name a few.

A new exhibition of the crown jewels will be unveiled later this month to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

The crown jewels have always provided a spectacle, attracting an audience of around 2.5 million people each year.

This exhibition will feature newly restored film footage of the Queen’s coronation and will present the jewels in improved lighting. The display consists of a large variety of crowns, sceptres, orbs, swords, and rings and will be displayed in the order that they were used in the coronation ceremony.

The exhibition will take the coronation ceremony as its central theme, and will examine how the regalia is used during the ceremony, exploring the symbolism of each object.

This year marks the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, celebrating Her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne. To commemorate this special occasion, we’re teaming up with Historypin to launch an interactive online gallery filled with memories of her time as Queen.

The Pinning The Queen’s History project will be made up of photographic images, videos and audio clips pinned directly onto a Google Map on the dedicated Historypin site. This will let you see historical images in modern context within Google Maps.

Throughout her six decades on the throne, The Queen has undertaken hundreds of visits around the United Kingdom and 261 official overseas visits to 116 different countries. Historypin is inviting people from around the world to submit photos, videos and other memories of The Queen during these visits.

Using Google Maps and Street View, the Historypin platform enables you to pinpoint the exact location of where the imagery was captured. They’ll be overlaid onto Street View, so you can compare glimpses of the Queen’s 60-year reign with how they look today.

Submit your memories of The Queen at www.historypin.com/DiamondJubilee/.

n 1957, The Queen and Prince Philip came to Virginia for Jamestown’s 350th anniversary celebration. They were welcomed with a 21-gun salute at the Patrick Henry Airport. At Jamestown, The Queen told the crowd of 10,000 that the settlement at Jamestown was the beginning of a series of overseas settlements made throughout the world by British pioneers. She asked that the ideals of the Jamestown settlers be pursued with faith and determination, “so that 350 years from now our descendants will be as proud of us as we are of our forefathers.” (Richmond Times-Dispatch “Queen Elizabeth, Philip Welcomed in Virginia, Oct. 17, 1957).

Richard M. Nixon, then vice president under Dwight D. Eisenhower, was the keynote speaker at the ceremony, as three Air Force jet planes streaked above the Jamestown festival site. The planes had retraced the route of the Jamestown settlers’ three ships from London to the New World (The Washington Post, “Queen to Visit U.S., Will Go to Jamestown,” May 12, 1957).

After The Queen’s visit at Jamestown, which included a tour of Festival Park and a religious service at Old Tower Church on Jamestown Island, The Queen and Prince Philip went to Williamsburg and enjoyed tea at the College of William and Mary. HM The Queen spoke from the balcony of The Wren Building – the nation’s oldest academic building in continuous occupation – telling the audience of several hundred that “rarely has any country been able to produce a group of such enlightened and skilled statesmen as those who gathered around George Washington.” (New York Times “Queen in Virginia Acclaims Leaders of the Revolution”, Oct. 17, 1957.)

Later that day, a reception took place for 1,500 guests at the Governor’s Palace in Williamsburg, followed by a State Dinner at the Williamsburg Inn. Overall, it was estimated that 50,000 people were able to see The Queen in Virginia. (RT-D ibid) For the complete article visit, http://queensvisit.governor.virginia.gov/main.asp?pg=about&sub=1957
